ABSORBING HOBBY

PHILATELIC INTERESTS WAIKATO CLUB'S BIRTHDAY “In these days of stress it is pleasing to have some relaxation like the hobby of stamp collecting to fall back upon,” said Dr. W. R. Fea, president of the Waikato Philatelic Society, at the birthday meeting held last night in the Centreway Tearooms. “Our club has endeavoured in the past 12 months to foster the hobby and to improve the knowledge of both adults and juniors. 1 am much impressed by the keenness of everyone connected with us. Starting 12 months ago with 11 members, we have grown in that time to 63 serious collectors, five of whom are on active service, and this is a record of which we can well be proud.” Dr. Fea said that in the coming year more would be done to encourage the juniors’ work. During the year 12 general meetings and three informal meetings had been held. Competitions of an interesting nature had been given while educational addresses had been a feature. More than 80 persons attended the birthday function and a fine musical programme was given as follows:

Pianoforte solos, Miss J. Coombes and Mr E. Vipond; violin solos, Mrs Biiand; songs, Messrs K. P. Eade, V. Wing and H. Primrose. Mr Bob Harris gave an exhibition of sleight of hand and Mr Primrose a recitation. Mrs Hammond was the accompanist. Mr N. E. Blomfield presented a musical competition, which was won by Mrs R. W. Smith. A written competition in rhyme was presented by the secretary, the winners being Messrs Conlon and Edsall, who tied for first place. The winners in the final were Mr D. Edsall and Miss Madeley. Prizes were donated by Mrs Whittaker and Mr Runnerstrum. A large birthday cake made by Mrs F. E. Whittaker and iced by Mrs Roblin was cut and distributed by Mrs Fea.
