WAIKATO ACTIVITIES RETURNED SOLDIERS’ NOTES DISTRICT LEADER’S VISIT (By “Dink”) The campaign now being launched for patriotic funds deserves the support of the public. “Rehabilitation” is an unfortunate name perhaps to have chosen for the fund. It is purposed to use it in very much the same way (although the scope is somewhat wider.) as the Patriotic and War Relief Funds were used during the last war. The R.S.A. is endeavouring to see, by having representation whether official or otherwise on the various boards, that its past experience is administering funds for the assistance of returned soldiers is not lost and that some of the mistakes made previously in administration are not repeated. Captain W. J. Collins, M.M., who is now serving with the 24th Battalion in the Third Echelon, was formerly at Te Hoe, and at one time the president of the Te Hoe subbranch of this association.
Colonel M. Aldred, the newlyappointed District Leader of the Home Guard, was in Hamilton this week in connection with his new duties. He has been president of the Waiuku R.S.A. since its inception and is mainly responsible for that body being the well organised branch it has always been. He has held the office of district vicepresident for New Zealand and has for many years been a member of the Canteen Funds Board.
The good work performed by the League of Mothers and Wives of His Majesty’s Forces is very much to the fore and they desire to express appreciation of the kind action of Mr F. G. Watson, of Watson’s Camera House in presenting a radio set to the league for use in the old bandroom. This set has now been in use for some time and is greatly appreciated by the men visiting the rooms. Mr S. N. Ziman has also performed much useful service to the league in helping to make the appointments at the room more comfortable and his example is to be highly commended. Sub-Lieutenant A. Nye, on leave from his war duties, recently returned to Hamilton. He advises us that this journal is eagerly looked for by the Waikato boys overseas. We take this opportunity of asking Returned Soldiers to furnish items of interest for publication in this column. Any correspondence may be addressed to the writer in care of Mr H. C. M. Norris, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. King’s Chambers, Hamilton. Will sub-branches of our association kindly note. _
