REDUCED TOLL
FATAL ROAD ACCIDENTS (By Telegram.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Saturday The road accident death-rate on a petrol consumption mileage basis decreased by 6.2 per cent during the year ended August 31 compared with the previous 12 months, said the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, in a statement last night. The number of accidents per million gallons of petrol consumed was reduced from 47 to 44.1, the number of casualties from 61.3 to 56, and the number of deaths from 2.7 to 2.5.
"These are encouraging figures.” said the Minister, ‘‘but, despite the reduction, 203 persons were killed and 4551 injured during the period under review. Deaths on the road since the war began probably exceed in number the deaths of New Zealanders from war causes either here or overseas. During the 12 months there were certainly many times more cases of non-fatal injuries on the roads than in the military forces. "Last month 13 persons were killed and approximately 300 injured. Seven out of the 11 accidents occurred on a Saturday, three on a Sunday and one on a Monday. This should serve to emphasise the need for special care at the week-ends.”
