MARKET FOR HIDES
PRICES NOT MAINTAINED “In November, 1939, auction sales of hides and skins were suspended, pending arrangements by the New Zealand Government for disposal,” said Mr E. M. Edkins in his address to shareholders. “The following month, December last, appraisal of sheep skins commenced and regular fortnightly appraisements have been held and will continue. “Hides were not commandeered, but were placed under the Hides Emergency Regulations Act and sales have continued under those regulations. Owing to loss of foreign markets, and the supply exceeding local tanners’ requirements, prices have not been maintained at pre-war levels, nor docs there appear an immediate prospect of any improvement.
