SCHOOL JUBILEE
FUNCTION AT NEWSTEAD PROGRAMME FOR TOMORROW The 50th anniversary of the estab- ! lishment of education in the Newstead district will be celebrated tomorrow, when a half-century jubilee function will take place at the Marsnmeadows (Newstead) School. A full programme will take place in the school grounds and it is expected that many ex-pupils from several distant districts will be present. With the voluntary help of the I early settlers the original school at Newstead, consisting of one room and ! a porch, was opened in October, i 1890. A great deal of the work in i the establishment of the school was I done by Captain James Runciman, i an early settler who took an active ' interest in the progress of the disi trict. The first children enrolled at the school numbered 33, but by 1901 , the total had grown so steadily that an extra room had to be added to cope with the increasing numbers of j children travelling on the Cambridge * train. First Committee In 1896 For the first five years the school was in the Hamilton East School district and its affairs were administered by the Hamilton East School Committee. In 1895 the boundaries of the Newstead School district were defined and the first committee was elected in January, 1896. The programme for tomorrow’s function will open at 11 a.m. and will comprise an assembly at the school, children’s games, luncheon, roll call and short addresses, jubilee photographs, display by present pupils, tree planting, afternoon tea and a jubilee dance in the evening. A church service will be held in the hall on Sunday morning.
