STRONG COURAGE

SPIRIT OF LONDON CALM AND INDOMITABLE RELIEF FUND AT £1451 Perhaps one of the finest of human characteristics in strong courage in extreme trouble. Whatever else a people’s faults may be, that trait seems to be able to surmount many obstacles and turn back many difficulties which might otherwise submerge a nation. Plagues, famines, war and devastation have harassed the world throughout it scenturies, but while there have been people of courage and endurance they have eventually won through. And so it shall be with London—-to-day one of the most harassed spots on the face of the earth. That mighty hub of British commerce is to-day the target for a ruthless regime which makes no distinction between soldier and civilian, and which can bomb a nation’s priceless treasures without heart or thought for the consequences. Surely no greater trouble could be inflicted on a peaceloving people, but in spite of it all Londoners have remained calm, with an indomitable courage that has drawn eulogies from many parts of the world.

As an expression of recognition of this courage, and in order to help relieve the distress caused by the air raids on London, the Dominions of the British Empire have sent home large gifts of money. From New Zealand £IOO,OOO has been donated to the Lord Mayor of London’s Fund, and the payment will be met by public subscription. In Hamilton the fund opened for this purpose by the Waikato Times has reached £1451 7s 6d. The following donations are acknowledged:—
