EXPORT VALUES
AUGUST INCREASE IMPORTS ALSO HIGHER (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday An increase in the value of exports of £485,000 for the month of August over the corresponding month last year is shown by the preliminary return of overseas trade issued by the Customs Department. It is the highest figure for any August since 1933. Imports also increased by £946,000. The value is the highest for August in any year since 1933, with the exception of 1937. The first eight months of the calendar year show a valuation of exports substantially higher than in any similar period since 1933. The nearest comparable figure is the £51,382,000 recorded in 1937. Imports, while well below the level for the corresponding eight months in the past three years, are still substantially higher than the totals for other periods back to 1933.
