Cook Anniversary
But for the outbreak of war, yesterday would have been Gisborne’s day in the Dominion programme oi Centennial celebrations, for October 9 is the date officially recognised as the anniversary of the first landing in New Zealand of Captain James Cook. Plans made early last year and accepted by the Government as a portion of national celebrations included a re-enactment of the landing of Captain Cook and his men on Kaiti Beach, adjacent to the monument which marks the locality of the landing. The East Coast Provincial Centennial Council decided to abandon for the period of the war the major portions of its schedule, including the Cook anniversary ceremonies.
