MILK ZONING BEGINS
SCHEME IN HAIMILTON SMOOTH CHANGE-OVER The zoning scheme formulated by the Hamilton Milk Vendors’ Association as a move to save petrol commenced in Hamilton this morning with very little inconvenience to consumers. With milk a commodity that goes into every home in the town there was a great deal of interest in the change-over, particularly among those consumers who had to change their milkmen. In some instances those who had been accustomed to picking up their milk billies on arising were given a reminder of the change-over when they discovered the billy empty, and the milkman arriving much later than usual. Generally speaking, however, the delivery was much earlier, and when the roundsmen are accustomed to their altered ‘beats’ a better service is expected. The scheme has been planned so that each milkman has a zone near his own base and his round corresponds to his output of milk before zoning came into operation. It is stated that the saving of petrol as a result of the scheme will be considerable, nearly all the 24 milkmen, saving at least 40 per cent. From new
on only one milkman will be catering for the custom in each street. This will save wear and tear on the roads as it was formerly a common thing for six and seven milkmen to cover most of the streets in the borough.
