BRILLIANT RUGBY

NORTH v. SOUTH SERVICES HIGH SCORING BY EACH 'By Telegraph.—l*re«a Association) WELLINGTON, Sunday 1 Teams representing the Services, designated as North Island and South Island, yesterday provided a crowd of 12,000 with one of the most exhilarating displays of Rugby seen at Athletic Park for many years. Sixtyone points were scored after some dazzling football. South Island won by 38 points to 23. The game was a benefit for the patriotic fund. The teams marched round the ground, headed by the Central Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Among the guests were the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, the Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, and members of the Cabinet. South's victory was largely due to the superlative play of the forwards, who received excellent support from the backs, of whom McAuliffe (Canterbury) was an outstanding performer. He scored a try and converted seven of his side’s eight tries. Finlay (Manawatu) was in magnificent form. For North Island, Bowman was the outstanding forward. Barton was the king-pin of the North rearguard, which did not have as many opportunities on attack as the i

opposition, whose backs end forwards seemed to link up from almost anywhere with uncanny precision The high-scoring does not signify weak tackling. Both teams set out with the purpose of throwing the ball about, and succeeded admirably South let 23—10 at half-time. Tries were scored for South by Fulton. Metcalfe, McAuliffe, Donovan, and Finiay, McAuliffe converting four. For North, McAneney and SargUaoa scored, Barton converting kbtb. In the second spell Jackson, Rhind amLj Donouan scored for South, converted! all three tries. CuidHBBH Barton‘galTHßltet scored ffjKgjgpSl Barton r— ~ “il'U
