WAIKATO WIN
WHISTLER SHIELD HOCKEY MATCH BETWEEN UMPIRES Although 22 umpires participated in the game, hockey rules were not strictly observed and talking on the Held was the order o,f the match. The occasion was the annual match between Waikato ana Auckland umpires for the coveted Whistlers’ Shield. Waikato regained possession of the shield by a 5-4 margin victory after a game that was bright and entertaining ir not characterised by strenuous hockey. The teams were:—Auckland: P. Robinson, E. Miehell, A. Holmes, A. Pooley, W. Flack, E. Houghton, C. Harvey, W. Spicer E. osborne, A. Biddle. Waikato: Su-ther land, Fanthorpe, Bowler, Carrington, Jenkins. I.uxton, Tiller, Perrett, Hunter. Bogue, Ewan. The game had not been long In "progress before Ewan found the Auckland net with a nicely-placed shot. The visitors were not long in equalising, however, Splicer eluding home tacklers to send the bail into the corner or the net. Good Passing Bouts Good passing bouts brought Waikato to the circle, but Auckland's goalie, Robinson, made several good saves. The visitors’ forwards penetrated the home defence on some occasions but infringements stopped them scoring. A penalty bully was f< light out between Fanthorpe and Robinson in the goal-mouth, but the Auckland player was able to get the bail away. Perrett dribbled the ball down to Auckland’s goal, but Robinson was too stuart and sent the ball well away. The Waikato umpires came again, however, and Hunter scored brilliantly, sending a hard I shot past the goalie’s head. : j The Auckland umpires set up a series of devastating attack-, but “sticks" infringements and offside play spoiled their willing efforts. The home team went ahead to a 3-1 . lead when Hunter scored his second goal j a few minutes later. Waikato’s len- j outside, Luxton, added to his team’s score j when he round ihe net with a nicelytimed swing from the lert of the circle. Auckland took a new lease of life and sroml three goals In quick succession trie scorers being Spicer (.2) and Roughton (1). Messrs P. M. Oracle and W. G. Fabling were the umpires.
