TE AROHA DISCUSSION MOVE BY UNION SEEN (Special to Times) TE AH Oil A, Thursday. A heated discussion took place at the Borough Council meeting when a letter ( was received from Mr G. A. Wilkinson, M.P., advising that the Government pro- . posed bringing down legislation amending the Shops and Offices Act. The object of the legislation, the letter asserted. \xa> to give power to the Arbitration Court to close all shops on Saturday and do away with tile lute shopping night u The 'Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, said he thought Mr Wilkinson was unduly alarmed The matter was not nearly as serious as Mr Wilkinson imagined, and in any case he doubted whether it came within toe ] Jurisdiction or the council Mr Kennedy said the closing or 'hop-, on' Saturday would cause serious inconvenience to farmers and would impose a further hardship to the already harassed , business people. It was clear that the i shop employees were behind the proposal and Mr Kennedy moved that the council protest against any legislation that wouJu I have the effect of closing business prei mises on Saturday.
