PATTERN OF BALACLAVA Materials.—3oz of 4-ply fingering and a set each of No. 10 and No. 12 knitting needles with points at both ends. Measurements. Length. 15in.; width across centre front to back edge folded flat, 7in. unstretched, but stretching to fit any head when worn. Tension.—7 sts. to lin. in width and 19 rows to 2in. in depth with ribbing measured stretched out and flat. Work into the back of all cast-on sts. to produce firm edges. Begin at the front edge. Cast on 100 sts. using No. 10 needles—32 sts. on each of two needles and 36 sts. on the third. Using the fourth needle work round in k 1, p 1 rib for 16 rounds. 17th round.—p 1, * k 2, p twice into next st.; rep. from * 6 times more, k 2, p 1, cast off 28 loosely, work in k 1, p 1 rib over next 18 sts. (this part goes under the chin), cast off 28 loosely. Place the 19 sts. for the chin on a safety pin and leave for the present. Now work backwards and forwards over the 32 sts. for the top of the head, in k 2, p 2 rib for 40 more rows, then cut wool. Now take a second needle and a ball of wool and pick up 40 sts. from one side of these 32 sts., work across the 32 sts.. then pick up 40 sts. down the other side (112). Now work backwards and forwards on these 112 sts. beg. the row with k 1. * p 2, k 2: rep. from * to end, finishing p 2, k 1, for 54 more rows, but inc. 1 st at end of the 54th row (113 sts.). Divide these 113 sts. also the 19 chin sts. on to three No. 12 needles, then with the fourth No. 12 needle work round in k l.p l rib for 2in. Change to the No. 10 needles and work the next round thus: * K 2. p 2, k 2, p 2, k 2, p twice into next st.; rep. from * all round (144 sts.). Continue in k 2, p 2, rib for sin., then cast off loosely in the rib. Press lightly, then sew the edges of the head pieces ta the sides ana press seams.
