WHITE ANT PEST

NOT LIKELY IN WAIKATO (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE. Thursday “I.have had it cn good authority that the white ant will not live in the Waikato, as the termite cannot stand frosts,” said Mr J. W. Garland at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Cambridge Electric Power Board, when the pest was under discussion. A letter was read from the Thames Valley Power Board, requesting information as to whether the white ant had made itself felt fri the Cambridge district. It was indicated that the ant had been brought into the country through the ironbark poles imported from Australia. The engineer, Mr IT. C. Oaten, said he had replied to the letter stating that there was nothing to indicate that the termite had been brought into the district by the importation of power poles. There had been one isolated case of the white ants having been in an old house in King Street, said the engineer, but it had been proved that the building had been attacked before poles had ever been brought from Australia.

Molasses for Silage The Ministry of Agriculture, Northern Ireland, announce that arrangements have been made with the Ministry of Supply for molasses to be released for use in the making of silage. No formalities are necessary for the purchase by farmers of one barrel which contains approximately p cwt of molasses. If, however, a farmer needs more than one barrel he has to get into touch with the Agricultural Executive Officer or Area Officer for his district. This officer, after having satisfied himself that the quantity of molasses requested by the farmer is needed for silage making, will sign a certificate for the farmer to present to his usual dealer, who will forward the certificate to his supplier.
