COUNCIL OFFICERS
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 3-YEAR CONTRACTS RENEWED The agreement under which the town clerk, Mr W. L. Waddel, and the borough engineer, Mr R. Worley, were employed in the interests of the ratepayers of Hamilton were discussed at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night when the town clerk advised that the agreements expired on September 21 and asked whether the council desired new agreements to be entered into. The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, moved that the agreements be renewed for a further term of three years. Stating that he did not know what the agreements contained Mr C. Lafferty asked for them to be read. In add:-ion, said Mr Lafferty, he did not think the agreements were necessary. The council d’d net wish to lose two highly qualified men like the town clerk and the borough engineer, said Mr H. M. Hammond, after the agreements were read, and thus the agreements were necessary. An amendment by Mr C. Croall that the matter be deferred until the next meeting, lapsed for want of a seconder, and Mr F. C. House expressed the opinion that the agreements were equitable and of value to the ratepayers. “Neither the town clerk nor the borough engineer was particularly anxious for the matter of the agreements to be brought forward,” commented the Mayor. “To either of these men at present would be a calamity for Hamilton, and in these times, when good men are scarce. I think we should welcome the agreements with open arms. At the time these agreements were entered into three years ago, so many positions were open that we might have lost either of the men.” The Mayor's motion was carried. Mr Lafferty dissenting.
