Pipe Band Contest Unless the war situation causes a change to be made, it is expected that 12 bands will take part in the Wellington provincial pipe band contest, which is to be held on McLean Park, Napier, on February 15. .Soldiers’ Chevrons From yesterday the majority of the non-commissioned officers of the territorial forces had the marks of their rank reduced to chevrons on one arm only, instead of on both sleeves of the tunic as previously. No change has yet been announced for staff officers. Pukemiro Collieries The 30th annual report and bal-ance-sheet of the Pukemiro Collieries, Limited, a summary of which was published in the Waikato Times on September 14, were adopted at the annual meeting yesterday. The retiring director, Mr A. S. Bailey, was re-elected. Money for Calves A total of £2564 for 10,646 calves has been disbursed to farmers by the Cambridge District Calf Pool as the second advance payment for the month of August. The advance payments are being made at 5s a calf, the same as last year. So far, the pool is 81 calves ahead of last year. Rent Restrictions In Canada The first action of the new Canadian Rent Control Authority, under the Wartime Prices Board, is the issue of an order, to operate from next Tuesday, pegging rents at the , levels ruling on January 1 last, says a message from Ottawa. The order will affect 36 municipalities throughout Canada. Church Army The Church Army in New Zealand celebrates its fifth birthday early in November, says the Waikato Diocesan Magazine. In the last two years there has been an increase of 14 permanent Church Army staff and 7 temporary war workers, making a total of 37 full-time workers. In addition there has been a sister working for a year in the Auckland district amongst Maori girls.

Resolutions of Sympathy Reference to the assistance given by the late Mr G. W. Vercoe to the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association was made by the president, Mr W. R. J. Frankli'n, at a meeting of the executive totlay. Members adopted a resolution of sympathy with the family of Mr Vercoe. Sympathy with Mr H. Rhodes in the death of his wife was expressed in a similar resolution.

Failed to Give Way Through failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian on an authorised crossing in Hamilton on September 10, Frank Dicker Russell, salesman, was charged before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, said he did not realise his mistake until after the offence had been committed. Russell was fined £5 and costs.

Garden Place Sale The Hamilton Borough Council approved last night a recommendation from the Garden Place committee that the valuers be asked to review the area still available for sale and submit their recommendations regarding prices and areas. It was also decided that arrangements be made for Mr S. B. Sims to prepare the required subdivisional plans and for the sale to take place in the Waikato Winter Show Hall at 2.30 p.m. on November 21.

Borough Council Vacancy The matter of filling the vacancy on the Hamilton Borough Council caused by the death of Mr J. E. Tidd came before a meeting of the council last night when a letter was received from the town clerjk, Mr W. L. Waddel, pointing out that the matter could be dealt with either by appointment or by a by-election. The triennial municipal elections were due to take place next year. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, the matter was deferred until the next meeting of the council.

Maeroa Soot Nuisance On the motion of Mr W. R. Shattock at the meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night it was decided to ask the borough solicitors what steps could be taken to force the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, to abate the soot nuisance which arose from its factory at Frankton. In reply to a question, the sanitary inspector, Mr J. W. Lewis, stated that, with the opening of the season last week, the soot nuisance in the Maeroa area was particularly bad. The presi- j dent, Mr W. R. J. Franklin, said that ] the association would do well to foster such shearing classes to the best of its ability. Appeal For Support “We will have to realise that we in New Zealand haVe a duty to perform in seeing that sufficient money is raised for all patriotic purposes,” said the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night in urging coun-

cillors’ support for the Waikato Patriotic Zone’s forthcoming queen carnival. Mr Caro said that the zone had to raise an allocation of £45,000 and if all realised their responsibilities this goal should be reached. Mr F. Findlay suggested that a king carnival, which had proved successful in Australia and elsewhere, could be run in conjunction with the queen carnival. Use of Municipal Baths Permission to use the Hamilton municipal baths on Tuesday nights for club nights and on Thursday nights in conjunction with the Y.M.C.A. Club for combined club nights was sought by the Hamilton Amateur Swimming Club in a letter which was received at a meeting of j the Hamilton Borough Council last ; | night. The Y.M.C.A. Club also j sought permission to use the baths on Tuesday night. On the motion of j the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, the Y.M.C.A.
