QUEEN CARNIVAL

NEW CAMPAIGN j SCHEME FOR WA IKATO £45.000 FOR PATRIOMTC FUNDS _ i_ a zm The second warttime queen carnival in the district will be opened on October 14 by the Waikato Patriotic Zone Committee to raise funds for the relief of distress in London, for assisting men retc.ming from war service before they receive the benefit of a State rehabilitation scheme, and other patriotic purposes. The' committee decided 'upon this method of raising the reqU ired £45,000 at a meeting in Hamilto n yesterday. The chairman of tl le committee, ?/Tr H. D. Caro, Mayor cf Hamilton, Sttid it had been decida d that a qu *en carnival was desirable as it was the only means of con tacting all the people. By relying on public fiubscription, only those willing to contribute assisted.

One of the joint o) -ganisers o fi. the carnival, Mr C. G. Hunt, said he could see no other way of liaising £45,000 in the Waikat o than 1/rom a queen carnival. It vvaould be necessary to divide the W'aikato into areas for the carnival, as the present inter-zone patriotic, a reas appeared to present some difficulties for the purposes of the carniwal. He suggested the division oi* the area into 11 parts, each section ’with approximately the same population and each to have a queen. A t vvelfth queen suggested was a representative of the Maori race throughout tbe Waikato. Under that scheme Hamilton would have three queens. End In December Mr Hunt further suggest’ ?d that patriotic committees should act as conveners of queen carnival committees, which should have the organisation ready and the qiueens elected by October 14. The carnival would conclude at midday on December 17. The joint organisers of the Son th Queen’s campaign in the recent provincial carnival, Messrs C. G. Hinnt and T. J. B. Mason, were appoinEed organisers of the carnival. 'Mr Mason outlined the management details of the campaign. The meeting agreed to adopt the scheme but was not entirely in favour of disregarding the present inter-zone boundaries. Adjustments might be made in some cases to avoid big differences in population. Messrs Edgar James, Mayor of Cambridge, W. C. E. George, Mayor of Huntly, and W. Hetherington, Mayor of Morrinsville, were appointed a committee to consider the bound aries. Messrs H. D. Caro, T. G. Reynolds, J. R. Fow and A. O. Rice were appointed an executive committee for the campaign. It was stated by Mr Caro that each area which had opened a newspaper subscription list could devote the proceeds to its own queen if it so desired.
