WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SPRINGDALE Mrs E. Palliser, president of the Springdale Women’s Institute, presided at the September meeting which was held in the local hall recently, when there was a large attendance. To commence the meeting members stood for two minutes in silent prayer for the nation. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs T. Burgess in the loss of her mother Mrs E. Reynolds was welcomed and enrolled as a member. Mrs Palliser was appointed delegate to the annual Federation meeting, which is to be held at Matamata. Two debates were held during the afternoon, those taking part being Mesdames E. Palliser, B. Johansen, L. Singer, R. Malcolm, H. Bridgeman and Misses F. and B. Roberts and J. Johnston. A sketching competition was won by Miss Roberts, Mrs A. Paterson being second. A presentation was made to Mrs W. Ryan by the president. Mrs Ryan has not missed a meeting for the past eight years. There was an excellent response to the appeal for clothing for refugees, several large parcels being handed in. Arrangements were made for sending the local men on active service a Christmas parcel each. Various competitions were held, the results being as follows:—Homemade cake, Mrs W. Ryan 1, Miss B. Roberts 2, Mrs Malcolm 3; best vase of flowers, Mrs A. Hunger 1, Mrs Malcolm 2, Miss F. Roberts 3; plate of flowers, Mrs Ryan 1, Mrs H. Bridgeman 2; single bloom, Mrs Bridgeman 1, Miss F. FAIRFIELD The September meeting of the Fairfield Women’s Institute was held recently, the president. Mrs W. King, presiding over a fair attendance. It was decided to send special Christmas parcels to members’ sons in the fighting forces and Mesdames Badeley, Rinteul. Henwood and Bradeley kindly offered to bake the cakes for these parcels. A reDort was given on the concert held in the Bailey Ward and members were thanked for their cooperation. The president, Mrs W. King, was nominated to go to Wellington as the Dominion Council representative and this met with whole-hearted support from all members present. An appeal was once more made to members to take Home and Country and thus keep in touch with headquarters. A letter of thanks was received from the Ladv Galway Guild thanking the Institute for a parcel of clothing. A renort. bv Mrs Grose on the meeting dealing with arrangements for the Group meeting to be held in October was then given and suggestions for the Institute’s part in the entertainment were discussed. Mrs

Andrews offered to assist the Institute by taking part in the table decorating competition to be held shortly in connection with the Y.W.C.A. and we hope for the support of all members in this undertaking. We were sorry to hear that Mrs Anchor, who usually assists the members in any choral undertaking is at present indisposed and so arrangements for a choir, which was to have competed at the Group meeting, have been curtailed. Mrs Davey once more made a contribution to our patriotic fund and was acclaimed for the way in which she has carried on her card afternoons. The roll call, “Hints on economy in baking,” was most successful. A floral competition arranged by the hostesses was won by Mrs Herdegren and the sponge-roll competition was won by Mrs Grose. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pike, Rinteul and Andrews. TE KAWA The September meeting of the Te Kawa Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, when the president presided over a good attendance of members and friends. The roll call, “Simple remedies,” was well responded to. Mrs Chestnut continued the Golden Thread and took as her subject Elizabeth Fry and it was most interesting. Competition results were as fol - lows:—Premier bloom, Mrs Chestnut 1; something for a soldier, Miss E Alderson 1; cocoanut ice, Miss Aiderson 1. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs S. G.
