BERLIN RAIDED
ADMISSION BY NAZIS BRITISH BOMB ATTACK FURIOUS GUNFIRE (United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 23 Royal Air Force Bombers on Sunday night attacked enemy bases in France and Belgium, and what the Air Ministry describes as an “ important target ” in Germany. The German news agency admits that Berlin had an air raid alarm lasting two hours. It states that three squadrons of British bombers entered Germany from over the Netherlands. Two of the squadrons headed for Western Germany and the other for Berlin. Flares were released over Berlin, but no bombs were dropped on the capital. It was officially stated in Berlin later that the British bombers did not succeed in causing great damage. Other reports state that anti-air-craft guns in the German capital were firing furiously, and that machines were heard circling overhead for some time. Widespread Operations An Air Ministry communique on last night’s Royal Air Force attacks on important targets in Germany and Channel ports states: Our aircraft all returned safely from widespread operations in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France, which were carried out successfully during last night and the early hours of this morning. Important aluminium works at Lauta, north-east of Dresden, were bombed and fires broke out. Railways in the neighbourhood were attacked at several points, and near Dresden hits were scored on a supply train. Strong forces of bombers also attacked docks, harbours and shipping at the enemy-occupied ports of Flushing, Antwerp, Dunkirk, Ostend. Zeebrugge, Calais and Brest.
NAZI INVASION PLANS
MORE TROOPS FOR NORWAY BIG GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS GAS MAY BE USED (United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 23 Large German reinforcements are reported to have been sent to northern Norway in the past few days, says the Stockholm correspondent of the British United Press. They have been placed in every important town from Trondheim to Kirkenes. This, the correspondent adds, probably explains the recently increased visits by the Royal Air Force to Northern Norway. The Royal Air Force last night bombed Trondheim and the Nordland railway. German anti-aircraft guns shot down one aeroplane and are reported to have damaged several others. The Norwegian authorities refused to disclose the amount of damage done to the railway. A heavy rainstorm has descended on the Straits of Dover, and a strong south-westerly wind has kept the seas comfortably high for those on this side of the Channel. The north regional civil defence commissioner has warned the public to resume the carrying of gasmasks. Hi said that if an invasion came from the sea gas would most probably be used
