TE AWAMUTU NEWS

; FARMERS’ UNION AFFAIRS RAISING OF STOCK VALUATION (Special To Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Monday. At the monthly meeting ol' tbe Te A\vamutu branch of tbe Farmers’ Union, Mr A. S. Wyllie presided. Also present were Messrs. G. R. Lawry, A. E. Bryant, li. R. Clarke, F. Gooder, J. Rea, G. T. Crawley, A. A. Dagg, G. Donaldson, \V. J. Hodgson, S. A. Aiiunon, C. W. Old, G. E. Glasson, C. North, L. C. Day, E. C. Perrott and the secretary, .Mr C. J. Flay. Mr Lawry reported on the recent Waikato Centre meeting. One remit considered was that, in view of the demand for increased production and the longer hours necessary therefor, farmero be exempted from the excess proflts tax in i respect of the longer hours. Mr Crawley, reporting on the meeting or the sub-provincial executive, said the idea or importing copra had been Investigated, but It was round that costs were prohibitive. It was considered that the arbitrary raising of stock valuation for taxation purposes would have disastrous results. The whole thing was really a taxation ramp, and though the Commissioner declared that the assessment had nothing to do with the Government policy, the fact remained that the Government collected the taxes. Arising from Mr Crawley’s report, Mr F. Gooder moved that a strong protest be. made. He considered that the system was unjust in that its effect was to tax on income which had not been derived. Mr W. J. Hodgson seconded the motion and it was unanimously decided to protest and to support the Auckland executive in any action taken. The Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce wrote suggesting that a joint meeting of representatives of the chamber and the union be held to consider transport. Mr Bryant supported the request and stated that it was time something was done, for if the people took no action, the Licensing Authority would deal arbitrarily with tlie question. It was decided to appoint Messrs. Bryant, Clarke, Hodgson, Crawley and Lawry with the president and secretary to confer with the Chamber of ; Following notice, Mr Hodgson moved j that a llnance committee be appointed, and Messrs, uld, Donaldson and Bryant were elected. Mr Lawry presented a report on the cull cow drive and paid over £26 14s sd, balance in hand. To this lie added a donation of £5 towards the branch’s fund. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Lawry for his donation and his work in connection with the drive. The sub-committee dealing with rural mails, reported, through Mr Bryant, that present tenders ran till the end of next year, but if any amendments or extensions were desired, representations would have to be made to the Postal Department early in the year. It was decided to leave a map or tbe routes at Te Awamutu, so that farmers cle-siring- alteration or extension could Inspect the present scheme and then make their desires known to the union as soon as po-sible. POWER SUPPLY BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING Mr J. T. Johnson presided at the September meeting of tbe Te Awamutu Elec-tric-power Board, and also present were Messrs J. G. Sutherland, N. M. Lethbridge, AV. J. North, S. C. B. Macky and Colonel J. Matson. Apologies were received from Messrs. J. IL Tcasdale, A. L. Storey and J. C. Monteilorc. It was decided to inrorni the Thames Valley Board’s engineer ttiat there was no evidence or the presence of white ant infection in poles or buildings in the district. The Electric-power Boards’ Supply Association is to be advised that the board considered tbe annual conference usually held in February should be deferred until September, 1941. In reply to the association’s inquiry, it was decided to express tbe opinion that the local body elections -should be held as usual, with nominations a month earlier. The Electricity Controller advised that if the board desired to apply the 5 per cent wages increase to salaries over £i"o a year, his consent would be necessary. The chairman held that the wages increase gave no permanent benetlt to any one and was a method which defeated itself. The increase had been ordered and the question was whether the board would make it uniform whether members or the staff were covered by awards or not. Whether or not the board agreed with the principle, he thought the only fair course was to make the increase unirorm. Mr Lethbridge remarked that the measure was really in the nature of a bonus to counteract tbe increase in the cost of living and probably the basic increase would be about £ls per annum. He moved that the increase of 5 per cent be applied to all salaries and wages up to £4OO, the maximum increase to be £2O. An amendment that the increase be on all salaries paid was moved by Mr Macky. He did not think that the board could fairly discriminate between salaries and wage 3 with due regard to the duties and responsibilities of members of the staff. The amendment was carried by a small majority. FRONTIER ROAD CRICKET CLUB
