CITY’S VICTORY HINUERA BEATEN NARROW MARGIN OF POINTS City defeated Hinuera at Rugby Park on Saturday by 11 points to 8 in the first game for the WarrenderHooper Shield. Neither side was at full strength, but an interesting game resulted:— The teams were:— City.—McDevitt, Nettleton, Perkins, J. Scott, Heyward, Hand, D. Cann, Johnson, Keen, J. Flyger, Dowling, Barr, Irwin, Keen, N. Flyger. Hinuera.—Dawson, S. Hawke, P. Hawke, Penetito, Settle, Brown, Stanbridge, Campbell, Lugton, Swap, Warrender, Connell, Deagan, McKeen, McMillan. An early penalty to City gave Johnson a chance to open the scoring but the wind carried the ball across. City made all the early pace but Warrender led Hinuera to the attack and a free kick gained further ground. When the ball came out of a ruck P. Hawke dashed in, scooped it up and ran across. He failed to convert the try.—Hinuera 3, City 0. With the wind in its favour Hinuera kept City on the defensive and when City twice failed to clear, P. Hawke, again anticipating well, ran through and scored. He converted the try.—Hinuera 8, City 0. Getting mo're of the ball the Hinuera backs had several chances but mishandling held them up. McDevitt made a great break for City and the home team was close for a spell. Using the wind Hinuera went to the attack again. Play was jon City's line when Heyward, after J several attempts, brought off an j interception and he ran the length Jof the field to score.—City 3, • Hinuera 8.
The Second Half * On the resumption after the spell I Hinuera again was the first to take the initiative. Kean, J. Flyger and Barr at last took the City team into • an attacking position but a free J kick halted it. With many infringe- ! ments stopping most of the movements, the game was not very i bright. City maintained the terI’ ritorial advantage but could not finish off its movement:. After several attempts to get moving the j City backline got under way and j Hand, cutting in splendidly, ran over • 25 yards for the best score of the . match. Johnson Tailed to convert. —City 6. Hinuera 0. i Perkins raised the crowd with a run practically through the team but* alter kicking for a gap, he was impeded. When Uettleton, Hand and Cann worked the blind side, Hand j made the opening for Canu to score
a good try.—McDevitt converting.— City 11, Hinuera 8. City maintained the pressure and was awarded a free-kick near the end of the game, McDevitt missing. The final score was— City 11 Hinuera 8 MORRIS CUP FINAL In the final for the Morris Cup a great game resulted between State Advances and Power Board, the former winning by 8 points to 3. AUCKLAND’S VICTORY In a fourth grade match between the Manakau (Auckland) and Frankton clubs the visiting team won by 37 points to 5. In the first half Frankton led by 5 to 4, but in the second spell the heavier .and faster Auckland team dominated the play and scored 33 points.
