BULLET IN EYE
LANDLORD’S DEATH VISIT TO TENANT POLICE DETAIN LATTER (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) TAUMARUNUI, Sunday A well-known resident of Manunui, near Taumarunui, Mr Jeremiah O’Sullivan, married, aged about 50, was shot dead about 4.30 o’clock this afternoon. A bullet from a .22 calibre rifle entered his right eye. The tenant of a house at which Mr O’Sullivan was calling, Mr Charles Harold Longley, married, aged 39, an invalidity pensioner, has been detained by the police. The dead man, who had a family of three children, occupied a cottage on the Taumarunui racecourse property at Manunui. He grazed cows on the property, but had received notice from the owners, the Taumarunui Borough Council, to vacate it. Mr O’Sullivan owned the cottage occupied by the Longley family about aquarter of a mile from the racecourse near the domain, and with the intention of occupying it himself, had notified the tenant to vacate his property. Mr O’Sullivan visited his porperty this afternoon, and while there he met his death. Dr. B: Sturtevant was called by telephone. He confirmed Mr O’Sullivan’s death, and communicated with the police. Constable Edwards, of Manunui, and Sergeant Abel and Constable Bissett, of Taumarunui, went to the scene of the shooting. An inquest will be opened to-mor-row morning by Mr W. Thomas, the district coroner.
