STOIC COURAGE
SPIRIT OF LONDON UNITED THROUGH ONSLAUGHT ASSISTANCE FROM DOMINION With a stoic calm worthy of their Viking forefathers, Londoners are determined that Britain shall win this war. Whatever the cost they are united in the resolution that, in spite of the Madman of Mid-Europe, the star of Empire shall continue to blaze even more brightly than ever among the world’s democracies. No ambitious Austrian paperhanger, they say, shall destroy all the traditions and privileges their ancestors have bestowed upon them, and they have ( shown the world that such an ' achievement is farther distant today than ever. For, with their indiscriminate and merciless onslaughts on the civilian populations of Great Britain, the Nazi marauders have built up against themselves a weapon even more terrible than guns and bombs. They have aroused the anger of a people whose love of freedom supersedes all else, and have stirred up a determination to see the hideous forms of Nazi oppression wiped from the earth for all time. Where the Fuehrer and his myrmidons had hoped that their reign of terror would break the spirit of Londoners and pave the way for an invasion of the British Isles, it has served the purpose of binding the people together and has strengthened their resolve to see the struggle through to a successful finish. Purposeful Spirit The splendid, purposeful spirit of the Londoners throughout the day and night raids that have been inflicted on them has won admiration from many parts of the world, and gifts to assist them in their hour of need have poured in from many countries. All units of the Empire have shown that they do not mean to let the courage of the English people go unanswered and have expressed a desire to assist in every way possible. Already from New Zealand £IOO,OOO has been sent to the Lord Mayor of London’s fund for the relief of distress. The amount will be met by public subscription.
