CAMBRIDGE DEFENCE PLANS RETURNED SOLDIERS’ OFFER (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE', Friday The September meeting- of the Borough Council was held In the Council Chamber on Wednesday night, when there were present the Mayor (Mr Edgar James). Messrs A. 11. N’icoU, W. R. Garrard, K. L. Wilkinson, N'. R. Souter and W. Moore Also present were Messrs F. T. Ray (town cilerk), W. McK. Jeffrey (engineer) and F. 11. Green (gasworks manager). The Department of Internal Affairs advised that the validating clause In connection with the lease >of the saleyards to the auctioneering companies had Been passed. The secretary or the Cambridge Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote offering to assist the council in any way in connection with the organising of the National Emergency Reserve in this district. He pointed out what had already been done in the formation of the Cambridge Auxiliary Reserve. The Mayor reported on the recen’ meeting in Hamilton which was addressed by the Hon. R. Semple. The present Cambridge Auxiliary Reserve would be embodied In the Government’s scheme. Enrolment forms would be sent to the loca' bodies and It would be their duty to form administrative committees. He felt that the Returned Soldiers’ Association or the present Auxiliary Reserve should nave representation on the committee to 'be set up. It was decided to reply stating that the council appreciated the offer made by the ex-servicemen and their desire to cooperate with the council in the operation of the Home Guard. Ground for Cricket The Cambridge Cricket Club wrote seeking the use of Victoria Square for the coming cricket season. The request was granted. In connection with the suggestion to move the taxi-stand owing to the shifting of a pedesrian crossing in Victoria Street from the Triangle Corner, letters were received front the borough solicitor and from the taxi proprietors. There wa? a difference of opinion .about fixing the new site on the west side or Empire Street. It was finally' decided to meet the taxi proprietors and go into the matter. Works in Borough The works committee recommended that Mr J. Elliot be thanked for his gift or trees, which had been planted In Bry'ce Street. The engineer reported tha-t all reflecting studs had been laid in the main streets and signposts placed. Repairs tc the high level bridge were continuing The work would be completed in about a week, at a cost df about £2OO, on which the Main Highways Board’s subsidy was to the extent of £3 to £l. The balance was distributed among the contributing local bodies. Precautions were being taken to restrict all water waste during the summer. \ scheme was being drawn up for Installing a chilling chamber at the abattoir.
