TROUT HATCHERIES
MORE EGGS COLLECTED (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Saturday A substantial increase in the quantity of trout eggs collected in the Rotorua district this year, compared with previous years, was reported by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, who arrived in Auckland this afternoon from Rotorua. He said recent additions to the Turangi hatchery and its equipment had enabled the increased output of eggs to be achieved and stripping to be completed two months earlier than previously. A total of 8,497,000 eggs had been collected so far this season, against 5,528,000 at the corresponding time last season, the Minister said. There was still a large number of sizeable fish in the Turangi stream available for stripping. It was anticipated that about 2,500,000 fry would be planted in the Taupo waters. At the Ngongotaha hatchery 5,087,000 eggs had been laid down for hatching, and to date 3,500,000 had been planted in various parts of the Rotorua area. In addition, 800,000 eggs had been sent to the Waikaremoana hatchery. Of that number 400,000 had been hatched and the fry planted in the Wairoa area. A further consignment of 400,000 rainbow eggs were in course of incubation and the fry would be liberated in the Wairoa district.
