The links were in the best order they have been this season. Rain early in the month had brought on growth in the fairways, to provide a good lie for all correctly-played shots, and the greens wore in excellent order, in spite of tills, the scores were not good, the .south-easterly wind being blamed Tor most of tlie* defections. In the senior grade. 1.. R. Haworth has a clear-cut lend, registering 74. The next best senior was D. McCathie, with 7 8 and K. C. Ward was 79, to share third place with V. C. Hollis. In tlie intermediate section W. J. Ward leads the field with 83. Behind him are C. If. White, who went surprisingly well, and E. Nickle, one or the steadier players, who both returned cards of 85. I. Fairbrother placed his be-st round for some time Tor 86 and E. J. F. Kennedy showed an improvement on form for 87. There are 21 intermediates to qualify for the in positions in niateh play, and every one. including W. 11. Cubis, who was 101. has a chance next week, when the second round i< played. Thn scores in the junior grade were not good. W. 11. Woolley with 00. being the only one to play belter than his handicap. In second rdare is 11. E. Davys with 93. and .1. W. Jeans, with 94, is best of the others. The juniors have the largest field, and live of the 2 1 players will fail to qnalifv.
