NEW CALEDONIA
TO STAND BY BRITAIN AIM TO SAVE FRANCE United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) SYDNEY, Sept. 21 The new Governor of New Caledonia, M. Sautot, who took office yesterday, said, when addressing a large crowd of residents, that the French Empire was not conquered. He added: “We must rally to the cause and not depend on Hitler’s goodwill, but stand by Britain, whose aim. is to save France.” LONDON, Sept. 20 The Ministry of Information, states that the news that New Caledonia has rallied to General de Gaulle has been confirmed. The new Governor, M. Sautot, arrived at Noumea on board a French ship and has taken over the Government in accordance with instructions given him. With regard to Lieutenant-Colonel Denis, the Governor nominated by the Vichy Government, he has had to give way to pressure from several thousand supporters of the cause of the Free French forces. One can therefore say that the rallying of New Caledonia is a result oi spontaneous movement on the part oi the population.
