OBITUARY

MRS C. H. PRIESTLEY WIFE OF FORMER MAYOR (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Friday The death occurred on Thursday of a well-known identity in Mrs Edith Eleanor Priestley, wife of Mr C. H. Priestley, aged 70 years. Mrs Priestley was the daughter of Mrs J. T. Garlick and the late Mr Garlick of Mount Albert, Auckland. Her early life was spent in Auckland, and in 1904 she married Mr Priestley, who was then in business in Te Puke. In 1907 they came to Cambridge and in the years that followed played a prominent part in the progress of the district. In the earlier years of their residence here, Mr Priestley conducted a wellremembered saddlery and leather goods business. He was elected to the Borough Council in 1909 and in 1923 was elected Mayor. Except for a break from 1926 to 1929 he held office continuously until he retired from public life in 1937. Mrs Priestley, in her rather quiet way, assisted Mr Priestley to carry out his duties, and was greatly respected by all who knew her. Of recent years she had not enjoyed the best of health. Mrs Priestley is survived by her husband and one daughter, Mrs W. Clemow, of Puketaha. MRS G. E. VEALE (Special to Times.)
