BOYS FOR THE NAVY
RECRUITS IN HAMILTON PRELIMINARY EXAMINATIONS Since the outbreak of war a considerable number of youths in the Hamilton district has volunteered for war service with the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. It is the only service in which young boys can enlist, recruits being accepted from the age of 15 years and 3 months, and it has therefore a popular appeal. On Wednesday 23 volunteers for naval service underwent the medical, dental and educational examinations in Hamilton. The candidates were from several parts of the No. 4 (Hamilton) military area. The youths are candidates for selection as Seaman Boys in the navy, and they were between the ages of 15 years and 3 months and 16 years and 3 months. Seventeen of them passed fit and six were rejected. They will later go through a final examination if called upon at the Philomel School, Auckland. Candidates for selection as stokers with the New Zealand Division were examined earlier in the month. They were between the ages of 18 and 22 years. Fourteen were examined in this class and 10 of them have been chosen by the naval authorities to undergo the final examination at Auckland. Four were not accepted, two being unfit, one over age, and the other under age. No further recruits for thesfe sections of the Navy are required in the meantime.
