TE AWAMUTU TOURNEY WIN FOR E. ETHERIDGE NOTES AND COMMENTS (By ‘Tyre Scot”) Last week-end was Eric Etheridge’'? week-end out in local goli circle* lor alter winning hi.* quarter-final comfortably in the St. Andrews Club championships with a brilliant 7 2—-which also won for him the weekly scramble —he went on the next day to win tlio Te Awamutu club’s open clay tournament from a very strong field. “ The field at Te Awamutu comprised 154 players and late starter? had to finish in the semi-dark. The To Awamutu course has unproved • considerably and this tournament Is a very popular one. The Te Awamutu club Is now well enough on the golfing map to get a full quota of entries in the future without aoce>pting post entries. Ooen After First Round After one round’s play In the tournament the issue appeared very open as tar as the big event went. Etheridge and Cuthbentson led with 7 s's, while snccombe ami J. Jeffries on plus 2 from New Plymouth had 7 o’s. Next were Gladmg Armstrong and K. S. Kelly (Te Awamutu l with 77’.*, and In the afternoon Etheridge was first in with a 74 for a total of 149. This left his must dangerous rivals, Jeffries of New Plymouth and GJaaing of M. Andrews, a hard task. Jeffries, who was la'L year’* winner, needed a 72 to wm while Glading needed 71. Jeffries wa= unable to improve on Ills morning round and returned the same tally—a 7 6 for 1,5-2—which consequently proved to be the runner-up -score. Gladiug, in the afternoon, had the same trouble as in the morning. Ills second? to the greens were not as accurate a* usual and from off the edge of the greens n.uld not get down with a chip and a put!. At the seventh in the afternoon—a bogey s—Giading was on for three and putted up to within four Teet of the hole. The four-footer railed to drop in and rested an inch from the hole. Going
up' and putting one-handed he touched the ball which still railed to drop, making him a seven and spoiling any chance he had. His ultimate total was 157. In the net 36-hole medal for senior? Ben Chalmers, from Lo-chiel, on the 9 mark, was the winner with a net total o! 144 while in the junior division D. Gee turned on an 84 In the morning Tor ? net 63 and also broke 20 in the afternoon again for a net GS, making hint a net total of 13!. This player certainly plays nearer the 15 mark than 91. Other Results Other results were as follows: The senior medal went to L. Spencer, of Taumarunui, with a 68 off the 10 mark, white A. Duncan, of Te Kowhai, won the junior Stabeironl with 37 points from a handicap of 13. In the senior Stable!ord J Barnett had the best card with 35 points from a 10 handicap. As they came to the turn the senior Stableford looked a gift to Phil Lee, or Lochiel, as to the turn he produced better figures than any of the scratch or plus players, his card reading 36 strokes and this netting mm 21 points. He failed to go on with it, however, and scoring only 14 points on the return half lost to Barnett on the count back. Quarter-final results in the club championships at St. Andrews were much as expected and It is probable that the senior final will he between Gladlng and Etheridge. Nevertheless, Etheridge will not have to take any chances again®!. Seccoanlbe in the semi-final. Intermediates and Juniors H. F. Blacfcie is still winning his way through the intermediate division, while a good game last week in that division was between T. Milroy and W. Coffman. Milroy was round in 85 but Coffman Jus-t went one better to beat him on the last green. 111 the junior division F. McCullough is still going well, as last week against L. ,7. Mark no reached the turn in 40, playing more like a lour handicap player than a junior, and on the return half was Just : about as good excepting for a bad hole at the 14th. The club championship quarter-flna'i'* were also played at Te Kowhai last week and the results there were as follows: A. Duncan beat C. Allan 6 and 5, V. Lirnmer beat A. Steele 3 and 2. L. Cotter beat V. Knight 1 up, R. Cotter beat M. Sing 4 and 3. The best golf of the day was between Cotter and Sing. Cotter having a medal round or 76 to Sing’s 80. Play at the Narrows At the Narrows the championships are a blit further ahead and Don Coventry, j who is the loev marker out there, was too j good for J. Boyd in the final, while Mr* Burton, las! year’s champion, again prevailed In the women’s championship, beating Mrs Hodgson In the final. A 72-hole medal round Is under way at the Narrows at present. With 3 6 holes played, A. H. Davies is In the lead with 140 net and is closely followed by II Wallace with 14'2.
