MISSION PROTEST
EXECUTION OF METHODIST The British Methodist Mission in Pingkiang, North-eastern Hunan, has protested, the circumstances surrounding the execution of an alleged Communist to the provincial authorities. The victim was dragged forcibly from the mission compound and shot outside. He was a member of the Methodist church. The British missionaries claim the local authorities had no right to remove persons from mission property. The execution in question is only one of a long series of Communist executions in this area. Pingkiang' was a sphere of Communist influence during the revolution of 1925-27 and even during the years of civil war. The victims of the current executions are the remnants of that in-fluence—old-time Reds. Whether the executions represent a fear of a new Communist-peasant uprising or are part of a campaign to suppress the Communists is not yet clear.
