NAZIS IN AMERICA

ACTIVITIES OF CONSUL SERIOUS CHARGES BROUGHT DISCIPLINARY ACTION (United Press <\sn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 18. 1 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Sept. 17 Mr Cordell Hull indicated that the State Department may take disciplinary action against von Spiegel, German Consul at New Orleans. He said the department is paying close attention to von Spiegel’s past and present activities. On September 16 the New York Post featured the first of a series of articles entitled, “Men Against America,” headed “Nazi Consul’s Threats—American Editor Warned of Reprisals by Hitler.” Charges were supported by a photostat of a letter from von Spiegel, who attempted in February, 1938, to intimidate and coerce the editor of a proAmerican German-language newspaper, the Texas Free Press.
