AMATEUR HARRIERS
C.Y.M. CLUB MODIFIED MARATHON (By “Plodder”) The last run of the season was held from St. Andrew’c Presbyterian Church, Claudelands, last Saturday. Owing to this date being scheduled as the closing one, the club was thus unable to make the trip to Auckland for the modified marathon, a distance of 12 miles, which was conducted by the Auckland sub-committee. The two trail-layers, R. Linsey and L. Smith, realising the disappointment of several members, set out to cater for a similar distance, ending up with a good 14-mile trail behind them. From the start, Sattrupp, Lundvick, Jones and McKinley set the pace for the first four miles, after this the held began to string out and with live miles to go Sattrup was leading Kemp by 30yds, with 120yds back to McKinley and a further distance to Kepple and Bogue. With a mile to go Kemp, McKinley, Bogue and Sattrup were running together with Kepple some 40yds behind, while the rest of the Held was still further back. Coming down Te Aroha Street Bogue went to the lead followed by McKinley, but Kepple, using his fine finishing sprint, easily disposed of these some 50yds from home. The result was: S. Kepple 1, C. Bogue 2, R. Sattrup 3 and W. Kemp 4. The time was lhr 24m. Closing: Function In the evening an excellent dinner was supplied by women members’ of St. Paul’s Church. The Rev. R. B. Tinsley presided over a gathering of some 45 guests and members. The toast to the King was proposed by the Rev. Tinsley, this being followed by one to the churches, sponsored by Mr Arcus and replied to by Mr Brunton. On behalf of the kindred clubs, Mr Bloore, of the Hamilton Harriers, replied to the toast proposed by Mr Jenkins. As president of the club Mr H. Cook outlined the club’s activities throughout the past season, mentioning the trip to Christchurch, trips to Auckland and Te Kuiti, as well as friendly runs with the Hamilton Club. Although the club had suffered loss of members through enlistments it was decided by a large majority that it would continue its existence even under the worst conditions. The trophies wen during the past season were presented by the Rev. r i. : nsley, while Mr H. Primrose took the opportunity to present Mr IT. Cook with a travelling case on behalf of the club for the valuable services rendered during the past seasons. The prizewinners were:—Senior championship, H. Primrose; junior championship, W.
