WORK ON MAIN ROADS COLLECTION’ OF NATIVE LAND RATES (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. iMr S. C. B. Macky presided at the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council on Monday, and also present were •Messrs J. T. Johnson, T. Church, E. F. Peacocke, J. W. Garland, R. J. Graham, D. B. Livingstone, K. L. onion, G. s. Hall, W. McGee, G. S. Clarke and N. Reid. A memorandum was tabled showing that the Main Highways Board maintenance vote showed a reduction or £3OO on the llgure considered by the District Highways Council. The council applied l’or an expenditure of £7O-60 and the vote permits an allowance or £6IOO. The engineer, Mr W. Graham Macky, explained that the vote would allow about the same amount or work to be done as last year but the Increased cost did not give much margin. Attention was drawn to the fact that the present by-law reqilirod property - owners to pay the cost or Installation or crossing culverts, but, In the engineer’s opinion, did not require the owner to maintain the culvert. It was decided to rerer the matter to the county solicitors with Instruction’s to amend the by-law so as to make the owner responsible ror maintenance or culvert crossings. It was decided to allot the rollowing names to roads;—(Main road Hatrlm-Pua-hue to be Puahue Main Road; main road. Roito-o-rangi to the main highway, to be Chamberlain Main Road; Riding Road Trotn Puahue Main Road to Chamberlain Main Road to be Park Road; Riding Road from Main Highway to Puahue Main Road to be Ranglaohia Road; the oM Main Highway to be Mandeao Road. Main Road Construction With regard to the Te Awaniutu-Cam-bridge main highway, the engineer said that the swamp sections should be side drained and the rormatlon widened to the rull width as rar ahead or the metalling and scaling as possible to permit maximum consolidation. though settlement would never be entirely overcome. The Main Highways Board had no runds unmediately available tor the work, but the

council, with the board’s approval, might consider the expenditure or loan moneys and carry the cost in the meantime The amount required would be between £inm» and £2OOO. The council declined to grant the contribution suggested by the Te Awamutu Borough Council towards the local cemetery funds, but attention wa# drawn to the condition or the approach and entrance to the cemetery, and It wag decided to undertake work necessary to improve the area. Reporting on the collection of rates on Native lands, the clerk, Mr T. Grant, said •that 111 the Orakau riding there was a 10l or good land Tanned by natives but only one or them paid rates. Me suggested that the whole position be made the subject or a resjKirt so that the council could deal with the matter fairly and wuth due regard to the ability ol the owner* t<» pay. Orders on dairy cheques should b» obtained where possible. The council decided to adopt the suggestion.
