THE GREATEST EVIL
(To the Editor) Sir, —We are constantly being reminded of the need for more population. We shall need man-power after the war for, we hope, more peaceful developments. Statistics from England are illuminating when such a country reveals decreases in young people during the past 17 years. Juveniles of school age give a correct view of the seriousness of the problem. In 1922, 5,092,000 children attended school; in 1938, 4,487,000 were on the school rolls. These figures show a decrease of 505,000 in 17 years. Every ten years, on this percentage, a loss ot 297,000 children, out of a population of 40 million souls. Plow long before elimination takes place is obvious. All the Dominions are tainted with this decrease. The authorities do not take heed; the people do not care; yet this ninth column is more devastating than all the other columns put together.—l am, etc., ADAM. Hamilton, September 17.
