AUSTRALIAN PURCHASE
AMERICAN FLYING-BOATS OUTLAY, OF £1,000,000 (.United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sept. 17 The Australian War Cabinet decided today to purchase from America 11 PBY flying-boats, at a cost of C 1.000.000. The Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, said delivery was expected to begin before the end of the year. The machines would take the place of the 20 Sunderland flying-boats ordered from Britain last year, but which were later handed to the British Government as a Coastal Command unit. The PBY machine has a maximum speed of 205 miles an hour and carries a crew of six. It is highly suited for long-range patrols.
A Consolidated PBY-1 flying-boat, the Guba, was flown by Captain P. G. Taylor, noted Australian airman, on his survey of the Indian Ocean route.
