OKOROIRE FUNCTION
RED CROSS DANCE Twenty pounds was realised recently when the committee of the Okoroire sub-branch of the Red Cross Society organised a dance in the Okoroire Hall. There was a ! large attendance including visitors ■ from Mamaku. Matamata and Puta- | ruru. Excellent music was supplied by Messrs K. Musker, A. Brown and R. Rodgers, and extras were given by Mrs J. McLaren. The arrangements were excellently carried out by Mrs E. Gubb and the committee. Mr N. Breward was master of ceremonies. Among those present were:—Mesdames J. McLaren, black marquisette; E. Gubb, -black crepe-de-chine; K. Petersen, navy embossed satin; R. Rodgers, brown florella crepe; D. O’Sullivan, black georgette and applique lace; J. Purdy (Tirau), aqua blue floral georgette; B. Groat, black French lace; F. Andersen, navy and white crepe-de-chine; M. J. Earle, black taffeta and silver lame: Le lievre, nut brown craquelle; H. Bellamy, clover tulip taffeta; J. Ansell, black satin and hailstone net; N. Le Vaillant, black crepe-de-soie. Misses R. Robinson, white floral crepe-de-soie; Rona Harwood, rose pink cire satin; Betty Parker, petunia satin and lace; Grace Barker, black and clover romaine; Phyllis Barker, black marquisette; Phyllis Ross, black cire taffeta; Eve Bellamy, mulberry taffeta; Valerie Gubb, shell pink Venetian lace; Joan Barker, navy and white cotelle; Gwen Brown (Tirau), floral marocain; Madge Carruth, black and white gypsystriped cotelle; Hazel Purdy (Tirau), cherry net taffeta; Clare Conn, rose pink satin; Betty Earle, black afghaline; June McLaren, black cherry taffeta; Thora Barnes (Matamata), cyclamen georgette; Andrea Petersen, powder blue lace; Phyllis Hiscock (Matamata), black cire satin; P. ly an hour, and also answered several questions, and the time passed all too quickly. On the motion of the president, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded her and she was presented with a beautiful bouquet. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs R. Boyd and Mrs F. Cunningham, after which the winners of the competitions were announced, as follows: —Novelty apron, Mrs A. Fisher, 1; Miss W. Tarr, 2; best three daffodils, Mrs A. Fisher. Mrs A. Cowley, junr., acted as competition steward, and Misses W. Tarr and N. Godkin were in charge of the sales table, which did good trading, the proceeds of which goes to the soldiers’ parcel fund. OHINEWAI The Ohinewai Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting recently, when Mrs Hill presided over a good attendance, one new member joining. After the usual business Mrs Shotbolt gave the golden thread reading. Miss Pipe gave an interesting demonstration on tatting, which was much appreciated, Competitions resulted as follows:—Floral horseshoe, Mrs Ridgley 1, Mrs McGaughran 2; best bloom, Mrs Haken. Hostesses competition, Mrs Shotbolt. The roll call was “The longest trip ever taken” and was very interesting and instructive. A sale of cut. flowers and posies was held in aid of funds. The hostesses for the day were Mrs , and Miss Hosking and Miss Pipe, who served luncheon. HOROTIU The Horotiu Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting recently. Mrs Paddy, the president, presiding over a good attendance. The competition was a sponge cake, which was won by Mrs Sullivan. The Institute made arrangements to send its usual quota of parcels to the soldiers. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs and Miss Hall and Mrs Law.
