WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WALTON The monthly meeting of the Walton Women’s Institute was held in the Walton Hall recently, Mrs J. Scott presiding over a good attendance. One new member was enrolled. Mrs J. Scott was proposed as delegate to the Waikato East Federation meeting to be held in October. There was a good response to the Lady Galway Guild appeal, each member bringing a parcel. The winners of the competitions were as follows: —Dinner bowl of flowers, Mrs Franklin 1, Mrs Scott 2, Mrs Fagan 3; best bloom, Mrs Paton 1, Mrs H. Southee 2, Mrs Scott 3. The roll call was “A good hint for the sick room.” The hostesses were Mesdames Lugton, Mapp and S. Kirk. WAITOA The September meeting of the Waitoa Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently when there Was a very large attendance. The president, Mrs H. Kerr, occupied the chair. Mrs Kerr gave a demonstration on wool work. Mrs D. Jensen was appointed the delegate to the bi-annual meeting,

which is to be held at Matamata in October. Good business was done at the bring-and-buy stall, the proceeds of which are to be donated to the Waikato East Federation. It, was decided that the branch donate the same number of parcels to the Christmas appeal for the fighting forces as before, each member to contribute Is. The competitions resulted as follows:—Neatest darning, Mrs J. B. Wathen 1, Mrs A. Souter 2; best bloom, Mrs Wathen 1, Mrs R. Colson 2; home-made toffee, Mrs S. Hyde 1, Mrs Wathen 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R. A. Johpston, S. Hyde, M. Maclean, D. Jensen, and Miss E. Smith . KAIPAKI The September meeting of the Kaipaki Institute was held in the hall recently and was fairly well attended. Mrs J. Graham, president, presided. One new member was proposed and welcomed. Notice was given of the bi-annual council meeting to be held in Hamilton on November 5. It was decided to make up two more soldiers parcels, for overseas. The roll call “How to remove various stains” was well answered and some useful information was given. The meeting then welcomed Mrs J. W. Chapman, president of the South Auckland Federation, who gave a most interesting talk on Institute matters, and especially on the council meeting in Wellington, which was held in the place of the usual conference.
