“TRUST MISPLACED”
GOVERNMENT ATTACKED WORKERS AND TAXATION (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) NAPIER, Tuesday A resolution protesting against recent actions of the Government was carried at a largely attended meeting of the Napier branch of the Enginedrivers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association, according to an official statement. The resolution reads: “ That the Napier members of the Englinedrivers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association make a most emphatic protest to the Government against the recent imposition of additional taxation on the wages of members of this association which is now equivalent to a cut of 20 per cent, made up as follows:—Sales tax 10 per cent, social security tax 5 per cent, and national security 5 per cent, with the additional deduction of 5 per cent for the superannuation fund.
“It is becoming clearly evident that the trust placed in the Labour Government has been misplaced, judged by the heavy and inequitable burden placed on the shoulders of those whom the Government was pledged to protect from suffering a lowered standard of living.
“ We also consider that the Prime Minister has either been badly misinformed or is evading the issue when he publicly states that the increasing series of resolutions being passed by railwaymen and other bodies are not representative of the mass of workers.”
