PROMINENT ATHLETE
V. P. BOOT IN CAMP ATHLETICS AT TE RAPA When a trim pair of running shoes was seen protruding from a canvas tent at the Te Rapa racecourse isolation camp it was apparent that there was a soldier in camp who devoted considerable attention to athletics. He is none other than V. P. Boot, of Canterbury, who is a secondlieutenant in the headquarters company of the 29th infantry battalion. Before enlisting for war service he was New Zealand’s foremost middledistance runner. He is the Empire Games champion and record-holder over the half-mile.
Te Rapa provides an ideal camp for Boot to keep up his athletics. On several occasions he has used the race track for a run, and several other troops under canvas who are keen on athletics have accompanied him. Boot, of course, was the most prominent performer at a camp athletic meeting held on Wednesday. Many interesting races were staged and keen competition prevailed among the various companies.
