CALF VALUES

PAYMENTS IN PIAKO SAME RATE OF ADVANCE The sum of £12082 17s lid has been distributed during the past few days to suppliers of the Piako Federated Calf Pools as an advance payment on bobby calves supplied up to and including August 27. The advance is at the rate of 1.2 d a lb. live weight and represents 6/3.6d for an average calf of 62.97 lb. The same rate of advance was paid to suppliers for the past two seasons. Contrary to expectations at the beginning of the season, there has been a marked decline in the skin market, and for this reason it was cpnsidered inadvisable to deviate from the usual rate of .advance. A further payment will be made in December consisting of a bonus on the calves in respect of which the present payment is made, and full payment on all calves supplied after August 27. Fewer Condemned An excellent feature of the season's operations to date is that the condemned percentage is only .5 per cent. Last season the percentage was 1.43 per cent. The improvement may be attributed to the better climatic conditions “prevailing this season and to the fact tUat cows generally are in better condition. It was expected that the number of calves collected this season would show a decline on that of the previous season owing to an additional number of heifer calves be : ng retained in many instances. However, the reverse is the case, and the calves collected are 1760 in excess of those for last season The flush may have been earlier this season, and the calves retained may have been offset to some extent by the fact that there has been less mortality and also a greater percentage of bull calves. The Waihi pool, which is affiliated with the Piako Federated Calf Pools, has advanced Id per lb. live weight, as for the past two seasons. Additional railage reduces the return to suppliers of this pool. The amount involved is £Bl2 7s, and the number of calves collected is 3017, coml pared with 2842 for the 1939 season, ■an increase of 175 calves.
