Carole Landis in “Turnabout”
Carole Landis’ first big break in motion pictures came when she was cast in the leading feminine role of Loana in Hal Roach’s prehistoric drama, “One Million 8.C.” She was a blonde and shapely cave woman, dressed in abbreviated skin garments. That worried her. ‘T’d hate tc get typed as an actress who depended upon a prehistoric version of a sarong to get along,” she lamented. Miss Landis didn’t worry long. Roach gave her the romantic feminine lead opposite John Hubbard in his production of Thome Smith’s mirthful comedy. "Turnabout.” And Carole, who hoped she could get her teeth into roles a bit more complex than that of a primitive cave woman, found herself asked to interpret one of the trickiest parts in film history. In “Turnabout” she had to perform the difficult right-about-face of appearing mannish. She studied Hubbard closely to pick up masculine gestures and mannerisms. She said she was quite a tomboy as a child, so that i was a great aid.
