Victor McLaglen to Star in “A Modern Monte Cristo ” Film
Victor McLaglen has been signed by Universal to star in “ A Modern Monte Cristo,” a spectacular picturisation of the historic South African diamond rush in the late 19th century. It will afford McLaglen one of the strongest roles of his career, according to Universal executives. Other top-flight performers are berounded up for the cast, which will be of all-star proportions. First of the films to depict the pioneer period of the great South African diamond industry, “ A Modem Monte Cristo ” will be produced on a lavish scale, under direction of Harold Schuster, with Marshal Grant the associate producer. Based on an original screenplay by Edmund L. Hartmann and Stanley Rubin, the production will get under way following completion of McLaglen’s current United Artists film, South of Pago Pago.”
