FUNDS FOR MAORI HOSTEL
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In last night’s edition of the Waikato Times I noticed,, with regret that the Waikato Maori "Hostel Committee had been refused a contribution by the Waikato County Council, in view of that body’s apparent lack of funds. With only £IOO required (to make up the £1350 necessary before the Government will give the £ for £ subsidy), it is more than unfortunate this worthy project has to to be held up for such a small amount. If the local authorities cannot assist in this matter, could we not, in the town of Hamilton, find enough people willing to make up the £IOO, and so let the hostel committee get on with its good work? Personally, although New Zealand is no longer my land of residence, I will be glad to do my share, for the sake of the Maori race, of whom we are all so proud. And whose heart has not thrilled with pride to see the fine physical specimens of that race marching in uniform alongside our own men, and doing their bit just as willingly and gladly, to keep this little isle of God’s Own Country free from the horrors of war? We love and respect these true New Zealanders, so let us show our appreciation by doing something for their race in general, by assisting to speed up the erection of the Maori hostel. As a soldier’s wife, whose husband is fighting with the Australians in Palestine, I offer half my weekly allowance of £2 2s to start this fund—if, by the end of the week, local boards and charities and councils have not been able to assist in this very worthy cause.—l am. etc., EN-ZEDDER. Hamilton, September 12.
