FAT STOCK SALES BETTER DEMAND PREVAILS RESULT OF SMALLER ENTRY AUCKLAND, Thursday At the Westfield fat stock market yesterday beef prices recovered some of the ground lost in the previous fortnight, ox beef selling to 39s per 1001 b. Mutton was another short entry and sales were at higher levels. The pig entry was a small one, and values showed an improving trend for porkers, while baconer pigs were quoted at firm late rates. The store pig market also attracted competition from buyers. The calf market reflected the same trends as other sections, bidding being firm throughout. Vealers also sold at higher levels, the best offer being one of £B, for a particularly line specimen. The Auctioneers’ Reports Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, Dalgety and Company, Limited, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report:— Beef.—Ox beef was penned in smaller numbers than last week. The quality was first class, and sold under a keen demand. Values improved on last week’s quotatons. A small yarding of cows and heifers also sold freely at improved rates. Extra choice ox, £1 19s per 1001 b; choice and prime, £1 16s to £1 18s; secondary and plain, £1 12s to £1 14s; extra prime young cow and heifer, £1 10s to £1 14s; choice and prime, £1 7s to £1 9s; ordinary cow beef, £1 4s to £1 6s; extra heavy prime steers, £ls 10s to £l6 ss; heavy, £l4 5s to £ls, lighter, £l2 15s to £l3 10s; light, £ll to £l2 ss; small and unfinished, £7 12s 6d to £lO 10s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; heavy, £8 10s to £9 10s; lighter, £6 15s to £7 15s; other killable cows, £5 to £6 ss. Sheep.—There was a small entry, for which competition was keen. An .improved sale resulted for all classes. Extra heavy prime wethers, 42s to 445; heavy, 38s 6d to 40s; medium, 35s to 36s 6d; light, 31s to 33s 6d; plain and unfinished, 28s 6d to 30s; extra heavy prime young and maiden ewes, 33s to 365; heavy, 28s 6d to 31s, lighter, 25s to 275; plain and aged, 20s to 235; others, 10s to 18s 6d. Hoggets.—An average entry sold under good competition at increased rates. Extra heavy prime hoggets, 35s to 38s; heavy, 30s to 335; medium, 27s to 295; lighter, 24s 6d to 265; light, 21s to 23s 6d; small and plain, 17s 6d to 20s.
Calves.—There was a very small yarding, the supply being insufficient
for butchers’ requirements. Competition was very keen for all classes, and values showed a considerable improvement on last week’s quotations. Runners, £5 to £lO 2s 6d; heavy vealers, £6 10s to £8; medium, £5 10s to £6 ss; light, £4 to £5 ss; small, £1 to £3 15s; unfinished and bucket-fed, £1 to £2 2s; bobby calves, 5s to 18s. Pigs.—There was again a small offering. Baconers sold at late rates, but porkers were in short supply, and values for these advanced. Stores sold very readily. Croppers, £2 19s to £4 15s; heavy baconers, £4 6s to £4 12s; medium, £4 to £4 3s; light, £3 16s to £3 19s; heavy porkers, £3 16s to £4; medium, £3 8s to £3 12s; light, £2 16s to £3 Is; small and unfinished, £2 12s to £2 15s; stores, £2 6s to £2 12s; slips, £1 15s to £2 3s; weaners, £1 2s to £1 17s.
