LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
QUESTION OF POSTPONEMENT COUNTY COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE “It is a difficult question for us to consider,” said the chairman of the Raglan County Council, Mr H. W. Wilson, at the meeting of the council at Ngaruawahia yesterday, when discussing the suggested postponement of local body elections. “We do not wish to create the impression of urging the postponement of the election in order to retain our seats on the council. On the other hand, with the already enormous war expenditure mounting, it seems to me somewhat extravagant to spend too large a sum of money on elections. The county clerk, Mr BrownleeSmith, considered that the concensus of opinion throughout the country was that the elections should be held as usual. Mr R. J. Glasgow considered members should refrain from adopting a definite attitude because the council was personally affected. The real issue lay with the Government and those concerned, the ratepayers, as to whether an election should be held. The council decided to leave the question open. Present at the meeting were:— Messrs H. W. Wilson (chairman), H. Johnstone, R. J. Glasgow, M. J. Corcoran, L. C. Logan, W. G. Vernon, O. S. Kirk, F. C. Johnstone, W. H. Moore, L. E. Lowe, A. Murray, A. Cobourne, G. Brownlee-Smith (county clerk), and K. M. Wright (engineer).
