STRUCK BY SWING

ACCIDENT IN STEELE PARK INQUEST ON CHILD’S DEATH “There is no doubt that this was a pure accident, and it was a very regrettable one,” said the coroner, Mr F. W. Platts, yesterday, when the inquest into the death of John David Goble, three-year-old son of Mr Thomas Edgar Davis, who died on August 31, as a result of injuries received while playing at Steele Park, was resumed. The verdict was that the child died as a result of injuries received when he was struck on the head by a swing in the park. He had received a fractured skull.

When the inquest was opened on August 31 the child’s father gave evidence of having put his son to bed. He found the child very sleepy but did not think he was unconscious. On the resumption of the hearing yesterday evidence was heard from the mother, Mrs Mary Hamilton Goble, and an eight-year-old brother, William Thomas Goble, who was also playing in the park at the time. Another child, Valerie Mills, stated that she saw John David Goble run in front of a swing and fall down. When the swing came back it struck the child on the head and he did not get up. He was carried home by his brother.
