UNUSUAL BIRTH

MOTHER IN IRON LUNG (Times Air Mail Service) LONDON, July 30 Mrs Virginia Matthews, a 23-year-old victim of infantile paralysis, has given birth to a son while in an iron lung at the county hospital in Los Angeles, states the Evening Standard. The baby weighed 61b at birth. Mrs Matthews’ paralysis is confined mainly to her legs, but she also suffers from respiratory weakness. Medical records show only two previous cases of childbirth in an iron lung, and in each of these either the mother or the child died. Mrs Matthews’ baby is well and she herself is showing improvement. She has two other children.
