BUILDINGS SHATTERED
IN HEART OF LONDON HELP FROM AMERICA (United Press Asn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 10 The New York Times’ correspondent says:— “Buildings in the heart of London were shattered by 5001 b. bombs in the early hours of this morning from successive waves of raiders. The explosions were so great that they knocked fleeing civilians off their feet. “A world-famous street is littered inches deep with glass and debris. Three churches known to all tourists are threatened by an extensive fire in adjoining offices. “Bursting anti-aircraft shells brought down three German raiders and simultaneously blew a fourth to pieces. “The worst sufferers are believed to be the East End. and south-west and central London.” The American Red Cross has ordered the immediate purchase in London of 12 mobile canteens, each composed of eight vehicles, at a total cost of 65.000 dollars. They will be used to rush hot foods to bombed areas. Since May the Red Cross has sent to Britain 151 ambulances. 5.000.000 surgical dressings, 2,138.000 dollars’ worth of medicines, thousands of pounds weight of canned and dried foods, and 470,000 pieces of clothing.
