TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES STATE THEATRE “Crime School” is all that its title J suggests, showing how easily youths 1 may be led into a life of crime if not given the right kind of environment and an opportunity to “make good” in life. There is plenty of excitement and much humour to lighten the tension. The popular Dead End Kids are seen to particular advantage in this appealing story, and once again prove how clever they are despite their youth. Humphrey Bogart and Gale Page have the principal adult roles and fill them with success. Few writers of adventure stories are more popular than Harold Bell Wright, and in “The Californian” he is seen at his best. Action, romance and humour are combined in entertaining fashion as the story works up to its thrilling climax. Ricardo Cortez, one of the finest actors of the screen, makes a welcome reappearance in this film. CIVIC THEATRE “Irene” continues to charm large audiences, “Alice Blue Gown” (with Anna Neagle dancing and looking very lovely in the coloured scenes), “Irene” and “Castle of Dreams,” are among the song hits introduced. The British star is cast as a little Irish shop girl who becomes a dress model, and then almost overnight emerges as the toast of New York society be- I cause of the gorgeous gowns she wears in public as a publicity stunt for her firm. Her wealthy employer (Ray Milland) falls in love with her while guiding her sensational career, but doesn’t reveal his feelings. But his best friend (played by Alan Marshall) becomes engaged to the beautiful model out of sympathy when she is exposed as a fraud. REGENT THEATRE The melodious songs introduced into “The Great Victor Herbert” include “The Bayaderes” from “Rose of Algeria”; “Rose of the World” from “Rose of Algeria’; “To the Land of My Own Romance” from “The Enchantress”; “March of the Toys” ! from “Babes in Toyland”; “There 1 Once Was An Owl” from “Babette”; | “Punchinello”; “Ask Her While the Band is Playing” from “Rose of Algeria”; “A Kiss in the Dark” from “Orange Blossoms”; “I’m the Leader of Society” from '“The Viceroy”; “I’m Falling in Love with Someone” from “Naughty Marietta”; “How Do j You Get That Way?” from “Angel I Face”; “I Love Thee,” from “Seren- ! ade”; “Neapolitan Love Song” from | “Princess Pat”; “Ah, Sweet Mystery j of Life” from “Naughty Marietta”; “Love is Best of All” from “Princess Pat”; “Lullaby” from “Angel j Face”; “Chang the Lover” from ; “The Willow Plate Suite”; “Thine ! Alone” from “Eileen”; “Some Day i from “Her Regiment”; “Kiss Me j Again” from “Mme Modiste.” THEATRE ROYAL 1 i There is a logical and definite | reason for every song, dance or skit
in “Hit Parade.” The cast includes the beautiful Frances Langford, Phil Regan, Louise Henry, Pert Kelton, William Newell, Ranny Weeks, Max Terhune, A 1 Pearce and his gang. Molasses and January, Carl Hoff and his Hit Parade Orchestra, Eddy Duchin, Duke Ellington and his band, the Voice of Experience, Ed. Thorgersen, Ben Grauer, George Givot, the Tic Toe Girls. Oscar and Elmer, and a score of others. The plot is a refreshing one, having to do with an enterprising young press agent’s attempts to star a beautiful but unknown radio singer. Jealousy, with its ever attendant romance, fear, and conflict, is the keynote of “Wives Under Suspicion.” ROXY THEATRE | “Invitation to Happiness” is a very appealing drama concerning ; the efforts of a couple to be happy > despite the' fact that the husband is constantly separated from his wife because he wants to become the
world’s champion boxer of the heavy-weight class. Their problem is further complicated when they haue a son who grows up to hate his father because of his continued absence. Irene Dunne plays the role of the wife, Fred Mac Murray the fighter and the supporting cast includes Charlie Ruggles, Billy Cook William Collier, senr., and Marion Martin. Jackie Cooper’s human drama, “Streets of New York,” is a story of a youngster who tries to follow in the lootsteps of Abraham Lincoln. Jackie runs a newspaper stand and attends law school at night.
